What type of facility this is

Prisons and penitentiaries are establishments where people sentenced by a final judgment serve their sentence and, depending on the country, also where people await trial. They are usually organised into units or regimes with different security levels and include areas for healthcare, education, work and rehabilitation activities.

In Canada, prisons are run by Correctional Service Canada (federal sentences of two years or more) and the provincial and territorial correctional services.

Knowing the category helps you understand what to expect: the regime, who may visit and the procedures that apply vary depending on the type of facility and the country.
