Find prisons, jails and correctional facilities worldwide, by country, region and municipality
Prison Directory is a free, independent guide to prisons, penitentiaries, local jails, juvenile centers and detention centers in 25 countries across Europe, the Americas and Oceania. It works in three simple steps: choose the country, move on to the region or state, reach the municipality or town and open the profile of each facility, with the essentials on a single page.
Each profile gathers the available data on the establishment: name, type of facility, responsible authority, address, phone, official website, capacity and hours when known. It is designed for families and friends who need to locate a facility, lawyers and legal professionals, journalists, students and researchers, and social organisations working with people deprived of liberty and their families.
We work transparently: the information comes from OpenStreetMap open data, no data point is invented or estimated, and we only publish institutional information about establishments, never data about inmates. Every country section is published in its own native language. Before planning a visit or any procedure, always confirm the details with the competent prison administration.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find a prison or correctional facility by town?
Choose the country first, then the region or state and finally the municipality. There you will see the profiles of every facility in that locality. If you already know the name of the facility, type it in the search box on this page and go straight to its profile.
What information does a facility profile include?
Each profile shows the available data on the establishment: name, type of facility, responsible authority, address, phone, email and official website, capacity, intended population and visiting hours or regime when known. Data that does not exist in the source is not shown.
In which language is the information published?
Every country section is published in its own native language, with its own web addresses (URLs) and sitemap in that language: Spanish for Spain and Latin America, Portuguese for Portugal and Brazil, and English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Czech or Danish depending on the country.
Can I check visiting hours?
When the hours appear in the data source, they are shown in the profile. Visiting rules change often and depend on each prison administration, so always confirm hours, requirements and documentation with the facility itself before travelling.
Is the information official?
No. The directory is independent and is not linked to any prison administration or government. The information is compiled from OpenStreetMap open data and may contain errors or omissions. Authorities and facility managers can request a correction or update free of charge.
Is data about inmates published?
No. Only institutional information about establishments is published. There are no names, case files or search tools for people deprived of liberty.
